Drawing Fish
July 1st, 2008
Here’s another cover element from the Ojingogo book cover.

I decided not to use this fish. It’s too big and clunky for the space I needed it for. But I still like it so I wanted to post it.
I love drawing fish. No matter how crazy and wild you imagine them to be, the ocean always has more interesting species. And their faces have such character and expression. Something straddling the line between horror and confusion.
Here are some sketches I did in a fish market in Morocco last month.

I love these fish lovely lively drawings!…some person somewhere I read about takes prints from dead fish, he covers the fish in paint and uses a strong thin paper and rolls the top of the paper with a clean ink roller the effects are pretty amazing!..just a thought?!

You like fish faces? Google “Ambon Island anglerfish.” The striped, button-eyed frogfish you will find has the face of a very creepy doll.
And Morag…the art of doing prints from fish like that is called “gyotaku.”
