Matrioshkas for the New Year

I’m researching Russian images for my new comic and fancied painting some matrioshka dolls.

Also, there’s an interview with me over at The Comics Reporter today re: Ojingogo. Tom Spurgeon’s blog is a daily visit for me, so it was a pleasure to answer his very thoughtful questions.

Here’s to 2009… Happy new year.

Vancouver

Just got back from the Ojingogo book launch in Vancouver. Which was loads of fun. Here are a few sketches from that great city.

Back from San Fran

delta airlines

Just got back from a great weekend in San Francisco – including a couple visits to Pixar in Emeryville. Was great to see all the beautiful art at the Totoro Forest Project auction and meet so many wonderful people.

Also very happy that the auction raised over $200k for the Totoro Forest Organization.

Aside from my flight getting hit by lightning (seriously) while landing in Detroit, it was a relaxing, wonderful week-end.

Process stuff for my Totoro painting

Here are a couple preliminary gouache sketches I did for my piece for the Totoro Forest Project. I didn’t really need to do them, I just had my paints out and wanted to play around before starting.

Bonne St-Jean

I’ve had a few conversations in the last few days about this city and how much it means to me. Yesterday was St-Jean Baptiste day here in Quebec – a provincial holiday which gives us a chance to reflect on what is unique and wonderful about this place.

There was a party on my street, with the local shop owner giving away free Kefta to all the neighbours.

I’ve been here for three years and it’s simply my favourite city in the world. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else right now.

Bonne St-Jean.

Paris Sketch Book

O-Jenogo

The above sketch is for Jenogo in Brooklyn! Who requested a “ghost-birds”-type sketch in their book.

Just sent out a big shipment of books and prints. Thanks to everyone for their patience. Every spare minute of the last month has gone into finishing the Ojingogo book which is very nearly done. I’m looking forward to putting it all online in the coming months.

Here’s a book sketch for Paul in Amsterdam:

More Metro sketches

Gearing up for a busy month of drawing. Settling into my new apartment and getting down to work…

Like a lot of people recently, Twitter seems to have become my number one social network. Especially while working alone on a lot of projects. Nice to have that “water-cooler” connection with people.

We’ve even set up a Twitter feed for Drawn! and one for the NFB.
