UPC idea for Ojingogo Swedish edition

Doing a slight design update for the Ojingogo Swedish edition. Here’s a sketch for an idea for integrating the UPC code into the back design of the book…

Swedish edition is released September, 2009 at the Gothenburg Book Fair with Ordbilder Media.

ANGER MGMT

Here are some birds I drew last week-end.

Book News:

  • Ojingogo was nominated for a 2009 Doug Wright Award. I’m really flattered and happy about that. The awards are at the Art Gallery of Ontario during the Toronto Comics Festival weekend. I’ll be at TCAF all weekend with books, prints, and (hopefully) new minicomics. Really looking forward to it.
  • Ojingogo was also nominated for a 2009 National Cartoonist’s Society Award. The award will be presented next month (May 23) in Hollywood. I’m gonna go check this out. When else would I be welcome in Hollywood? Srsly?
  • Also Ojingogo will be released in Sweden this fall at the Gothenburg Book Fair, by the Swedish publisher Ordbilder. They are a great little publisher and I’m going try to make it over for the launch. But I’ve heard it can be expensive….
  • What else? I just finished teaching my journalism class this year – so I haven’t had time to draw much of anything in the last couple months. I’m wrapping up marking – and it looks like the class is done for good – so I’m excited to hit the drafting table again this week…

    Roadkill Roadkill

Montreal designer Elaine Ho – aka Roadkill Roadkill – made a set of ojingogo jewellery and it’s all for sale on her Etsy shop. Here’s the post on her site.

There are three pieces including Ojingogo (the little squid), AK (the Domokun-looking dude), and Tubu (walking tofu). (Links to her Etsy shop).

Man, she even put little bowls of bap on Tubu’s head…

Also: Follow Roadkilkill on Twitter. She’s always full of great design links and …. photos of food.

    Ojingogo Book Cover Design

Update: Yes, I do contract/custom book cover design. Please contact me directly to inquire about rates.

Here’s an early sketch I found for the Ojingogo book cover. I loved doing cover / production design. I wanted the cover to hint at the whole story – the same way Saul Bass’ credit sequences do for the films they introduce.

It was also important the cover be a good design and not necessarily a good illustration. Too many comics rely on good illustrations – or worse – ruin good illustrations by neglecting design.

I was also taking photos of book covers wherever I went. Here are a few book covers I found in Paris last Spring:

    Expozine 2008

I’ll be at Expozine all weekend in Montreal. I’ll be beside the Drawn & Quarterly table selling my Ojingogo books, sketchbooks, silkscreen prints, prints and (maybe?) original art.

    See you there, hopefully.

If you can’t make it, most of the stuff is available in my shop anyway.

Toronto Book Release & Word on the Street

Toronto book release party is this weekend. Tons of details at the Beguiling site.

I will also be signing and speaking at The Word on the Street book festival in Toronto all afternoon Sunday.

    Here’s what I’m up to:

2:30-3:30 – Forsythe, Shewchuk and Colek signing at D&Q table
4:15 pm – Petits Livres panel (Graphic Novels tent)
5:00 pm – Webcomics Showdown panel (Graphic Novels tent)
6:00 pm – Festival ends (Sob!)

Also, here’s a CTV news piece about Drawn & Quarterly with some footage of me blubbering about my book thrown in for good measure.
