Here are some birds I drew last week-end.

Book News:

  • Ojingogo was nominated for a 2009 Doug Wright Award. I’m really flattered and happy about that. The awards are at the Art Gallery of Ontario during the Toronto Comics Festival weekend. I’ll be at TCAF all weekend with books, prints, and (hopefully) new minicomics. Really looking forward to it.
  • Ojingogo was also nominated for a 2009 National Cartoonist’s Society Award. The award will be presented next month (May 23) in Hollywood. I’m gonna go check this out. When else would I be welcome in Hollywood? Srsly?
  • Also Ojingogo will be released in Sweden this fall at the Gothenburg Book Fair, by the Swedish publisher Ordbilder. They are a great little publisher and I’m going try to make it over for the launch. But I’ve heard it can be expensive….
  • What else? I just finished teaching my journalism class this year – so I haven’t had time to draw much of anything in the last couple months. I’m wrapping up marking – and it looks like the class is done for good – so I’m excited to hit the drafting table again this week…

Dr Sketchy life drawing in Montreal

I went with Cameron to Dr Sketchy (burlesque life drawing) in Montreal this weekend. Here are a couple watercolors.

    Three Gators

    alligator illustration

I was home for the holidays and I brought my Montreal sleep-schedule with me. I was doing a lot of painting after everyone else went to sleep. Watercolours. Acrylics. Paints my niece had lying around.

I have big plans for these little gators (or crocs; whichever you like).

    Montreal Book Launch Photos

The Montreal book launch was lots of fun. I did a 20 minute talk about Korean cartoon culture and then signed books into the night.

I didn’t realize until afterwards, but A LOT of people showed up. Thanks to everyone who came – or wanted to come, but couldn’t.

Check out more photos of the event at the D&Q shop blog.

    Tourist vs Traveler

He did not think of himself as a tourist; he was a traveler.

The difference is partly one of time, he would explain. Whereas the tourist generally hurries back home at the end of a few weeks or months, the traveler belonging no more to one place than to the next, moves slowly over periods of years from one part of the earth to another.

Indeed he would have found it difficult to tell among the many places he had lived precisely where he felt most at home.

    Paul Bowles, The Sheltering Sky.

I dont identify more with one than the other, I just think its a beautiful passage.

    Bears and Beer T-shirt reviews

    johnny-bb-blog.jpg

The first shipment of Bears and Beer Tshirts has gone out. Here’s a photo of Jonny from Boston, proudly showing off his Bears and Beer to the world.

If you’re still waiting for yours, it’s in the mail now. If you’ve already got one, please send me a photo so I can add it to the gallery.

We’re going to do one more print run, so you can order one here if you want to be in on that.

    Here are some early reviews:

    “LOVE it!”
    -Ariella
    Boston, MA

    “Sweet!”
    Rob Maguire
    Montreal, QC

“A stranger came up and told me it was awesome!”
    Julia Wertz
    Brooklyn, NY

    “A big hit!”
    Luc Latulippe
    Vancouver

Okay, they’re all my friends and I added the exclamation marks myself – but whatever – this Tshirt business is hard work, man!

Thanks to Jeff Rowland filling all the orders for me.

    Robot Porn

    ghost birds robot sculpture

Yesterday, the amazing robot sculptor Tom Torrey sent me these images of the finished Ghost Birds sculpture.

The sculpture is based on the “Ghost Birds” header-illustration I use for this blog. The model is about 3lbs 4 oz, two feet long, with arms made out of flexible gas lines, and a wooden chassis tacked in copper and aluminum.

The birds are cut from “sanded plastic sheet”. The eyes and shoulders are steel.

For a bit of background on the sculpture, check out the initial paper-craft designs for the sculpture, photos of the wooden base here, and progress shots of the full-sized sculpture here.

Check out Tom’s “GammaRayBots” Etsy shop, where he sells his hand-made robot sculptures.
