Best DVD commentary tracks
There’s a great discussion about the best writer and director DVD commentary tracks over at the Alligators in a Helicopter blog.
Some of the highlights:
- The Limey - Soderberg/Dobbs bickering about who did more
- Elizabeth - Shakur Kapoor
- Superman - Dick Donner and Tom Mankewicz
- Pirates of the Carribean - Elliot & Rossio; I just watched this with commentary. Excellent.
- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Nicholas Meyer; Karl pointed me to this years ago. Also, great.
- Election - Alexander Payne; Election is one of my favourite films; I’m looking forward to watching this one.
- Anything with Joss Whedon.
- Anything with Ridley Scott.
- Anything with Robert Rodriguez.
- Frankenheimer on Ronin and The Manchurian Candidate.
- Gosford Park - Altman
I’ve been working my way through the list this week. I watched Superman and Pirates with commentary - and both were brilliant.

If you are not immediately repelled by the idea, love actually has a wonderful commentary; lots of hugh grant taking the mickey out of colin firth’s acting abilities.
I remember at one point his phone rings and he talks to his golf coach for a while..

I generally don’t listen to commentary, but I really liked the one for “The Ninth Gate,” by Roman Polanski. There are some great comments about film making in there and were well worth the listen.

Chiming in late, but I just finished Cronenberg’s commentary for “A History of Violence”, and it was attending a Master Class. Concise talk about the intentions and choices made throughout the film by everyone involved; I wish all commentaries were this enjoyable.
It got me in the mood for finding more great commentaries, and the internet sent me to this article. Any chance of resurrecting the topic?
