Embroideries, by Marjane Satrapi (8 down, 44 to go)

“That’s life. Sometimes your on top of the horse, and sometimes the horse is on top of you.”

Marjane Satrapi is a breath of fresh air. She’s full of strong opinions and zero bullshit.

Embroideries was supposed to be a lighter, more positive reflection on Iran after the diatribes in the Persepolis books. But it’s still surprisingly angry and biting. This time, she uses men, not Iran, as her punching bag. And that’s fine with me. There’s so much misogyny in comics, it’s very refreshing to see the other side.

I loved Persepolis and Persepolis II, but fell for her completely after I read this interview in the Independent last year. Such fearlessness. It comes through in her writing and her illustration.

Great stuff.
