Chez Schwartz – a documentary about the legendary Montreal smoked meat deli is opening next week in Montreal theatres.

Until I saw the film, I had never actually eaten a Schwartz’s sandwich. But I went and had one after the bar last Friday night and now I finally understand what the long lineups are for.

The film has a lot of great characters who I’m sure are about to become local celebrities. The Russian poet-busser, the laid-back family-loving manager, the aggressive steak-griller, the pan-handlers.

In fact, one of the most poignant stories follows Ryan Larkin (who just passed away last week) as he learns he has lung cancer and offers his candid thoughts about life (“Don’t talk about sunny days”).

Great film – check it out if you have a chance.
