Teacher’s Day

May 14 is Teacher’s Day in Korea. A day to celebrate and thank educators of all stripes for their dedication and hard work. For me, this meant a deluge of socks and after-shave.

In honour of this day, I asked my six- and seven-year-old kindergarten-graduate class, whom I’ve taught every day for the last eight months, to write a short essay about a teacher they know. To my delight, most wrote about me.

Here they are, unabridged and edited only for spelling. I think you’ll agree, they’re nothing if not honest:

Emily

Do you know Matt? Matt means short about Matthew. Matt loves Ellie teacher so marry! [It's not true! ] Matt lived in Toronto. Matt is in Korea and his family is in the Canada. UPenn students likes Matt. Matt is a good teacher. Calvin is a bad for Matt. But Matt loves everyone. Matt miss every one out of class.

Rebecca

Matt is a English Teacher. He is handsome and a good teacher and funny. He has big eyes. He has glasses. I think he love computers so sometimes his eyes are red. How long does he play on the computer? To Matt teacher, I want to play Monopoly today. from Rebecca.

Julia

My teacher’s name is Matthew.

Matthew is in my classroom.
Matthew is a man.
He always says “oush, oush!”
I study Amazing English [text book] with Matthew.
I play games with Matthew’s uno cards.
I play game Scrabble with him too.
I like Matthew. Because he’s funny.
He lived in America. [sic]

I like my teacher. My teacher’s name is Matthew teacher.
